Do You Need Help Getting Organized?

Are you looking for a change in your life… in your home?

Getting organized is a great way to make those changes. It isn’t quick and it may not be easy, but it will be rewarding! And remember, like so many things in life, being organized is a journey, not a destination.

Different people have different reasons for wanting to get organized. Some want more space, some may just want to declutter, while others may want the peace and tranquility of an organized room.

The nice thing is, whether you are organizing a garage, a bedroom or a kitchen, the principles are the same. There are 5 basics steps for your journey.

  • Defining your space
  • Sorting through your stuff
  • Designing your storage
  • Getting on task and staying on task
  • Staying organized
This will be a 5 part series of articles. This article will get you started by discussing  “Defining Your Space”.

Why is defining your space important? Because once the function of a space is determined, it limits the types of items that you would put in it.

If your whole house needs organizing – take it one room at a time, otherwise the task is daunting!

Begin by getting a pencil and paper (this will help keep your goals and decisions in mind), and ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What is the purpose of this room – how will it be used by the family? Does the room have one purpose only or will it be shared for different activities, such as a family room that may also have a home office in it? List the different activities that will occur and what impact they will have on it. This will help determine what the room’s contents should be.
  2. Are the room’s furnishings suitable for its use? Are they sturdy enough, are they functional, are they accommodating?
  3. Decide what will need to be stored in the room and then determine if the current storage solutions fit your needs or will you need additional shelves or containers?

Once you have accomplished this task, you are ready for the next step which will be discussed in our next article:

“Sorting Through Your Stuff”
